What is Hair porosity?
flexibility of the outer layer of the hair called the cuticle determines how easily moisture, chemicals, products and oils can go in and out of your hair. For most, porosity is genetic, but it can also be affected by external factors such as exposure , heat damage and chemical processing. Knowing your hair porosity is crucial in finding out the best way to manage your hair . We created this system to help you take the guess work out in choosing the right products for your hair .
LOW POROSITY HAIR CARE
If you have low porosity hair, your hair cuticles are flat and may be very tight and compacted. Since the cuticles are not opened enough for the cortex to receive sufficient hydration and moisture, it is difficult for liquid, air, chemical treatments or other products to penetrate the hair shaft. As a result, there may be a build up of products on your hair. Fortunately, there are solutions for low porosity hair involving hydration and moisture.
Tips on how to take care of low porosity hair
Wash with a clarifying shampoo.
Have you been using plenty of hair products only to realize that they don’t seem to moisturize your hair? If you have closed cuticles, using any amount of products won’t help the situation at all, since the products simply build up on your hair. One way to remove this build up is to use a clarifying shampoo. Try Veravana Low Porosity Herbal Cleansing Shampoo designed to remove build up without stripping the hair off it natural oil.
Heat/Steam
As with anything, heat used in moderation can be good. However, if you use heat too frequently, you might damage your hair. Using indirect heat or steam is a good way to open the cuticles of your hair. This can be combined with a number of treatments above, such as sitting under a heated dryer for deep conditioning or a hot oil treatment. If you don’t have a dryer or steamer, a blow dryer works as well. Simply apply the heat to each section of your head for about 3 minutes. You can always put a bonnet on and place the blow dryer through the cap if you’d like the heat to circulate a bit more. However, do exercise caution and be careful not to burn yourself.
Warm Water Rinse
One way to open the cuticles is to wash your hair with warm water, which will then allow the ingredients in your hair products to enter the hair shaft. On the converse, using cold water will close the cuticles, so refrain from rinsing your hair with cold water if you have low porosity hair.
Deep Conditioners
If you’d like to take it one step further than simply washing with warm water, try using a deep conditioner to moisturize and give your hair the vitality it should have. Apply a deep conditioner, sit under a dryer with a plastic cap (or alternatively, sit under a steamer without a plastic cap) for 10-15 minutes. The heat will cause your cuticles to open, thus allowing the conditioner to penetrate the hair shaft. At the end of deep conditioning, your hair should feel moisturized and soft. It is advisable to perform deep conditioning regularly, which can be weekly or biweekly.. Try VERAVANA LOW POROSITY DEEP MOISTURE CONDITIONER which is specifically designed for your low porosity hair.
Hot Oil treatment
To moisturize and repair damaged hair, try a hot oil treatment. This treatment involves heating oil and massaging it into your hair and scalp. After that, sit under a dryer or wrap your hair in a warm towel and/or plastic cap. Let it sit for about 10 minutes or as long as needed. Similar to deep conditioning, hot oil treatments can be performed weekly, biweekly or monthly or as necessary. Try VERAVANAVLOW POROSITY GROWTH OIL Specially designed to penetrate the hair shaft into the cortex of your hair.
Conditioners/Moisturizers
Leave- in Conditioners/ Moisturizers are great, but it’s best to use light ones instead of heavy products that simply builds up on your low porosity hair. A good light conditioner to use is a hair milk that will penetrate to the cortex of the hair. Try VERAVANA LOW POROSITY DEEP MOISTURE LEAVE IN HAIR MILK Specially designed to penetrate the hair shaft into the cortex of your hair.
Baggy Method
The baggy method allows your hair to absorb moisture. It is done by applying a moisturizing product to your hair and covering your hair with a plastic bag. Keep the bag on until water droplets form on the sides.
Co-Washing
You may feel like co-washing your hair if you have low porosity, but try not to do so. Co-washing creates a perfect environment for the hair product you’re using to sit on top of all the dust and dirt accumulated on your hair over the week. If you want to wash your hair, it’s best to properly cleanse your hair with a clarifying shampoo to enable your deep conditioner or other moisturizing products to reach the cortex of your hair. Try Veravana Low Porosity Herbal cleansing shampoo designed to remove build up without stripping the hair off it natural oil.
Do not apply thick/heavy oils and butters
As mentioned above, stick to light hair products as much as possible. Applying thick/heavy oils and butters to low porosity hair will likely have the counter-effect of causing build up on the hair, since the closed cuticles will not allow these heavy substances to penetrate the hair shafts. Instead, use light oils such as jojoba, coconut or light butter.
Apply Moisture to Damp Hair
When you apply moisturizing products, make sure your hair is only damp, not wet. The problem with applying moisturizing products to wet hair is that those ingredients will compete with the water on your hair, so less of the product will enter your hair shafts. To maximize the effects of both the water and your hair product, use the product only on damp hair so that the water is able to penetrate the cuticle, followed by your product .You don’t have to guess which product is right for your hair any longer. Watch how Veravana Low Porosity Hair Care System cleanses, repairs, moisturizes and protects your hair in four easy steps consisting of vitamins, herbs and other light natural ingredients. High Porosity hair care
High porosity hair can be inherited genetically or it can be a result of damage from chemical processing, Heat damage, harsh treatment or environmental damage. High porosity hair has gaps and holes in the cuticle, which let too much moisture into your hair leaving the hair prone to tangling and frizzing in humid weather. Due to the nature of highly porous hair, even a simple act of shampooing, swimming and bathing can lead to more damage and breakage.
